Linda Kaemph with African Impala Ram

Hello Ladies. I have another great story from a beautiful lady I met in Pennsylvania at the Harnsburg show. Her name is Linda Kaemph from Liberty, New York. This wonderful hunting opportunity takes us to “Africa”.

Bow hunting was a dream of mine but being born with osteoporosis I never had the strength. My husband Glenn made it a reality. He introduced me to the crossbow and taught me how to shoot.
“Do you feel lucky?” That is what my husband said when he called me at work to say we won a safari in South Africa. Glenn had taken a chance from the IBO. He received a call from Ken Watkins, president of the IBO. Ken proceeded to tell Glenn that we had won the bow hunt to Africa for two hunters. At first it was hard to believe my ears. We had been to Africa the year before for our first time and were elated to know we were about to return. Our first hunt was ten days of 30 mph winds, so this was a chance at redemption. We selected the first week of June for our hunt. This is the beginning of African winter and the dry season. Our professional hunter, Charl Watts of Caracal Safaris met us at the Johannesburg Airport and drove us to Roolbokkraal, about four hours from the airport. This placed us northwest of Joburg and on the Botswana border. The area would remind on of our desert Southwest. We arrived around midnight and got some sleep before our first day of hunting.

Day one was the usual cool morning with a cloudless sky. We got in our practice shooting. We had to put the crossbow together and sight it in. When we were ready, we had lunch and went out for an afternoon hunt. We were situated in a concrete blind near a waterhole.

Warthogs came in first, then wildebeest. I wanted an Impala so we concentrated on them. Soon an Impala presented itself. I shot at the Impala, and it jumped the string and was gone in an instant. The day ended with no animals shot.

Day two found us at a new waterhole. Warthogs were plentiful but we were advised that we would see some better ones. All day there was a steady procession of Impala, Waterbuck cows, Steenbok, and Kudu females. We ended the day without firing a shot but hopeful about the game we had seen.

My First Hunt Ever

Day three was very cool and game was not moving early. About 10:00a.m. nice Impala ram with a broken horn came in. It was the Impala rut and this ram was chasing others off. More Impala’s came, then some Kudu, Waterbuck cows, a young Wildebeest bull, and some Vervet monkeys. We broke for lunch and came back to the same blind for the afternoon. About 2:00P.M. I got a shot at a nice Impala ram. This was my first hunt ever. We found my trophy back in thorn trees. When I got my shoulder mount back, I am going to hang it in my office and dream about my next hunt in Africa.
